Good thing we tapped some experts, a.k.a. small business owners who have an eye for gifting - especially with intention. Check out what they’re adding to their gift (and wish!) list this year, and what they have to say about shopping small.

Holiday Gift Guide with Small Biz Owners We Love

Moana Hana Ferry of Moana Vintage

Tell us about your brand and what led you to start it.
One morning in April 2019, I enthusiastically jumped out of bed and I started Moana Vintage that very morning. I created an Instagram account, photographed clothing from my own closet to get started, and from there, my brand was born.

When I was little, my mama would ask me, “If money didn’t exist, what would you want to do?” My answer still to this day has always been, “to travel the world and curate, collect and sell beautiful clothing, furniture, art and home goods in my store.” Fast forward to 2021, I wish I could say I’ve accomplished all of that. I haven’t quite figured out the traveling-the-world part, but starting Moana Vintage has been my first step in making those dreams come true.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?
When it comes to holiday gift shopping this season, I’m focusing on gifting secondhand items when possible to support a circular economy and supporting small and local businesses. More recently, I’ve been slowly but surely curating a collection of art for my home and have found so much joy in the process. So I think finding unique pieces of art at the flea market or antique store are great gift ideas for your friends and family. Another thing that is also plentiful at thrift stores and antique stores are beautiful vintage vases. I have a thing for vases, and probably have too many, but who doesn’t love having fresh flowers in their home? I also love gifting friends and family with things that help you relax and unwind; like your favorite incense (mine is from Japan), essential oils, and bath salts (I take a bath everyday). Another gift idea I’m loving this season are handmade ceramic items such as mugs and bowls.

Why is shopping small so important this holiday season?
A beautiful thing that has come from the pandemic has been to see so many people starting their own businesses and creating products and brands they’re passionate about. I think more than ever during this time it is crucial to support all the small and local businesses whenever we can. That includes going to the farmers market to support your local farmers when doing your holiday grocery shopping, to shopping from the husband and wife or sisters who own a small shop in your town. By shopping small, you are not only supporting the people who are brave enough to run their own businesses and go against the grain, but you are most likely supporting businesses that truly care about our planet and are working hard to make a difference. If we can all start transitioning to shopping secondhand and shopping small, even if it’s in the smallest of ways, any movement in that direction is a positive change and you should feel proud for being a part of it.

Mo Baker of @mobaker_

Tell us about your brand and what led you to start it.
I am a food + props stylist and photographer building out a studio here in Vilnius. I began my career in visual journalism and through a series of ping-pong type maneuvers, I slowly morphed into working exclusively in food media. I am a caretaker and nurturer and I feel my work now is an extension of that. Feeding people through recipe development all while making the food look delicious and attainable! I am finally at home in my work and it feels amazing!

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?
What people actually need! I am not a fan of receiving senseless things that take up space, so I really try and think about how a gift can be utilized. Sometimes that means self-care, like a massage or a nice lunch. Other times, that means a beautiful item that brings joy to the person's home. Either way, I do my best to shop with intention for the people I love.

Why is shopping small so important this holiday season?
Shopping small is so important EVERY season! Last year we decided to only shop small/local/or secondhand for all gifts. At first it seemed scary, because of the ease of big corporations, but we quickly realized what a lie that is. We love our local businesses and it's a joy to support them because we want to see them for years to come! Not only is shopping small better for our environment, it's also putting money directly back into our lovely community!

Michelle Callahan of Callahan and Idle Sleepwear

Tell us about your brand and what led you to start it.
I like to make products that make people feel cool and comfortable. There is so much I appreciate about textiles and design that it is incredibly satisfying to be able to combine my love for certain yarns and fabrics with different silhouettes that I think our customer will enjoy. I started my businesses to be able to create and to make a living while doing so.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?
I love to gift things that I've tried myself so I can turn my friends or family onto them. I also like gifting things that I know they'll get a lot of use out of. Of course, quirky random gifts are always fun. Mostly, I want the recipient of my gift to feel special.

Why is shopping small so important this holiday season?
Being a small business owner I know how impactful shopping small can be. Your purchases not only fund the small business, but their team's salaries, operating expenses and their ability to continue to bring you new products, support designers and artisans.

Emma Fortini of 14E Cosmetics

Tell us about your brand and what led you to start it.

I was raised by the beach in San Diego and recognized the importance of taking care of my skin at an early age. I got tired of dealing with sunburns, constant adult acne breakouts, and early signs of aging and began to explore some  natural solutions. As a makeup artist, I quickly discovered that the selection of truly all-natural cosmetic brands that targeted all of my skin issues were limited. That’s why I started 14E Cosmetics, where every ingredient used is 100% natural, thoughtfully curated and intentional.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

This year I’m focusing on supporting small businesses and sustainability. I’m so over giving (and receiving!) chachkies that end up making my space cluttered. Quality over quantity.

Why is shopping small so important this holiday season?

Shopping small is more important than ever. As a small business owner myself, these last 2 years have been rough. But shopping small you are directly supporting that person, their small team, and their families while they continue making a living out of doing what they are passionate about. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I do a little happy dance with every order that comes through!

https://www.personellelimo.com/blogs/news/mother-s-day-gifting-with-our-fave-local-florists 2021-05-04T14:55:28-07:00 2021-05-04T15:07:51-07:00 Mother’s Day Gifting with our Fave Local Florists Linda J Russom There’s no doubt about it - moms make the world go ‘round, especially with the year we’ve had. They’ve juggled distance learning while working from home, entertaining stir-crazy kids while trying to keep their own sanity. They’ve been keeping a brave face and strong outlook - like always. So this Mother’s Day, make sure you celebrate your mom, the mother-figures who had a hand in raising you, and the moms you do life alongside more than ever.

Still not sure what she’ll like? We tapped some of our fave local florists (who know a thing or two) to find out what they’re doing to celebrate and what’s on their wish list this Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day Gifting with our Fave Local Florists

Whit aka @whit_hazen

How did you get started as a florist?

I’m an avid gardener, and before moving to Los Angeles from Washington D.C., I was earning some extra cash on the side getting the spring garden together for a florist in DC.  She asked me if I wanted to help out with some weddings, and from there I was hooked.  I used my move to L.A. as my opportunity to change careers and pursued it full steam. It was all a total leap of faith with lots of sleepless nights and early mornings.

What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?

Peonies show back up right before Mother’s Day and they just make me so happy.  I also love lilac and ranunculus (the peachy colored ones are my favorite!).

What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

For Mother’s Day I’m going to be working me butt off! It’s like the SuperBowl in the flower world (we have two with Valentine’s Day) so I’m most likely going to be selling lots of beautiful things to people to celebrate the rad women who’ve nurtured them in their lives. Afterwards I’m going to call the moms in my life to catch up.

What does this day mean to you?

Mother’s Day is really special to me - the name Hazen in my business is actually my mom’s first name. I use it as an homage to her and the way she really nurtured my creativity growing up.  I think motherhood and the ways women hold up our communities goes so undervalued in our world, so I love an opportunity for all of us to remember and to love the people who have held us up.

Marissa of Marissa Madison Events

How did you get started as a florist?

I started as a wedding planner taking on “little centerpieces” the bride would have in mind. Small centerpieces quickly turned into full weddings and large floral installations.  Large installs have  definitely become my favorite.

What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?

I love mixing materials in arrangements to get unique color, texture and depth. Lately I have been mixing in pops of dried materials and orchids because it’s so fun to work with flowers in alternative ways.

What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

Being the youngest mother in my family, I will likely be hosting brunch for my mom, aunt and grandma. They take care of me in so many ways it’s great I get to do this for them. I also half-jokingly, half-seriously told my husband I'm going to a hotel to spend a night by myself and lounge around all day in a robe.

What does this day mean to you?

As a mom it means so much that I get to take a pause and celebrate that in itself. It’s pretty cool to stop and reflect that I grew my babies from my body and I get to be their mom.  On top of that, being together with my grandma to see her with her great grandchildren always puts me in awe. She was (and still is!) a huge part of my life growing up and now my kids get to experience that with her, which is pretty surreal.

Amy of Hello Honey Flower Co.

How did you get started as a florist?

I got started as a florist five years ago while I was working full time as a publicist in Los Angeles. I was looking for a creative outlet and started designing flowers I would pick from my walks around my neighborhood! I realized I had a passion for creating pretty things with natural elements and Hello Honey was born.

What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?

I love the softness of garden roses paired with the funky textures of protea. I always try to incorporate something unexpected into my arrangements while still keeping them timeless.

What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

This mother’s day my little fam and I will go out to brunch then walk to a park in our neighborhood. I have two young daughters so we will probably keep it simple and sweet. Quality time is what I want most.

What does this day mean to you?

Being a mama is the best title I’ve ever been given and Mother’s Day means so much to me now that I am a mom to my two girlies. It has given me such appreciation for the amazing mamas in my life and it’s a gift to be able to celebrate all that is motherhood.

Paolo Parada of Levant Lane

How did you get started as a florist?

I began my journey as a florist by chance. I planned a couple of close friends' weddings and fell in love with flowering along the way. It's been an amazing journey learning about flowers as well as figuring out how best to honor them in an arrangement. I love to introduce flowers that people may not know about, use the wonkiest ones that commercial florists may discard, and forage around my neighborhood!

What are your favorite flowers to use in a Mother's Day bouquet/arrangement?

Mother's to me are everything! They're equal parts love, patience, flexibility, fun, and understanding so I love to use florals that capture those versatile personalities. This year, I have been inspired by ranunculus with it's soft and sometimes wavy stems, gorgeous petal layers, and vibrant colors. They can make an arrangement spunky or elegant depending on the florals around it.

What will you be doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

This Mother's Day will be my first in many years that I am taking the day off! I am usually putting together arrangements for other people's moms but I am able to wrap up Mother's Day a little earlier and spend some quality time with family, good food, and lots of laughing.

What does this day mean to you?

Mother's day is extremely special to me. The day I became a mom changed my life - my kids are everything to me, my mom is one of my best friends, and I even get to share motherhood with my little sister whose son just turned 1 this year. Being a mom is hard, sometimes exhausting, but always so worth it.

Sometimes all it takes is a simple, easy change in your everyday routine or swapping out a less than earth-friendly product for something new. It’s all about progress over perfection; making small attainable changes you can handle. Looking for some new ideas on how to increase your personal sustainability practices? We tapped some babes who know a thing or two on the subject. They’re filling us in on how they’re acknowledging Earth Day and what eco-friendly products they’re loving now.

Earth Day, Every Day With Sustainable Babes We Love

@sharonashnayder of Tuesdays for Trash

Tell us about Tuesdays for Trash and what led you to start it.

Tuesdays for Trash is a global movement based in Oregon encouraging everyone around the world to dedicate at least one day a week to the planet by picking up trash. We are a youth and women led organization mobilizing for our future and a cleaner home for all. The movement was started as a way to show individuals their actions matter and that small acts of change when multiplied can transform the world.

What are some ways you practice sustainability in your everyday life?

Sustainability isn't just something I practice but has truly become a survival method for me. As someone who didn't grow up having much, I learned to incorporate sustainability as much as possible into my life and it's grown today to carrying around reusables wherever I go, doing laundry with dryer balls and eco-detergents, picking up trash everyday, offsetting travel emissions, etc.

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

My movement has organized a fun cleanup in Oregon where we'll be bringing the community together to help keep our environment litter free and enjoy some time outdoors with fun games and snacks together.

What are some accounts you follow for tips on living more sustainably?

I love following @get.waste.ed @brightly.eco and I honestly learn a lot doing research for posts on @tuesdaysfortrash.

What are your favorite brands at personellelimo?

My favorite brands are Superga, Rollas, and Whimsy + Row!

@faye.sen, Home Gardener

Tell us about you and when you got into gardening?

I’m a first generation American pursuing medicine and have noticed a huge gap in the level of care when it comes to people of color. I believe growing food is one of the many ways we can incorporate functional sustainability and foster collective culturism. I’ve always had plants, but didn’t start an edible garden until my grandma passed away from breast cancer. She loved plants so I planted a blueberry bush for her. Every year that it fruited, I’d invite my family to pick as much fruit as they wanted. I began to love gardening and it quickly became one of my favorite methods of both self-care and community care.

What are some ways you practice sustainability in your everyday life?

I’m constantly figuring out what I can reuse and recycle for the planet and people. Sustainability to me isn't just about making sure things get discarded properly, but it's about "Can I create something new out of this? Can I compost this and later use it to nourish my garden? Can I dye this stained shirt with a natural dye so that I can continue to wear it? Can I just walk there?" etc. I’m also very mindful about how I shop, where I shop, and what I shop.

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

I will be celebrating Earth Day by having a picnic in my garden and making a list of 3 things that I want to change/be more conscientious about this year. I know one of those things is remembering to turn my light off when I leave my room.

What are some social media accounts you follow for tips on living more sustainably?

I follow a bunch of gardening/farming accounts because I believe a huge part of sustainability involves cultivating healthy soil and plants. I have so much to learn; there are many accounts that teach me things like @queerbrownvegan,@humanswhogrowfood, @climateandstyle, @allyne_ann, @reducewastenow, @least.waste, @growinthelight, and so many more!

What are your favorite brands at personellelimo?

My current favorite brands at personellelimo are Girlfriend Collective, Mate The Label, Lisa Says Gah, Lacausa, and From Here To There Curated.

@amyquichiz of Veggie Mijas

Tell us about Veggie Mijas and what led you to start it.

I started Veggie Mijas because I really wanted to have vegan friends of color after graduation. I was really passionate about food justice and environmental justice, and I realized that other people of color were as well. Veggie Mijas started out as an IG page for vegan recipes, which then led to an entire plant-based community that wanted to meet up and gather to create change in their own communities. I wanted that as well, I just had no idea to what scale Veggie Mijas would end up being.

What are some ways you practice sustainability in your everyday life?

By eating mostly plant-based foods, reusing cute (and not so cute!) jars, buying from local stores, thrifting and repurposing items that need extra love, etc. I believe that many people can practice sustainability in many ways, and it looks very different for a lot of us.

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

I’ll be helping my teams organize events throughout their communities, whether that’s visiting a farm sanctuary, setting up movie screenings with films based on vegan and climate information, or hiking trips. I am also celebrating by enjoying the good weather, having a picnic, and gardening with my partner on our balcony.

What are some accounts you follow for tips on living more sustainably?

I would recommend following @myvidaverde, @browngirl_green, and @cerowastecindy

What are your favorite brands at personellelimo?

Baggu has the cutest and most sustainable bags - they're perfect for farmers market trips! Girlfriend Collective also has incredible leggings that are super comfortable. I'm grateful that I can shop at personellelimo, and know many brands are sustainable and great quality...and cute!

@chloegoesslowly, PhD Student + Sustainable Stylist

Tell us more about your PhD program and what led you to take that route.

Pursuing my PhD in political science came from an interest in wanting to better understand the root behind problems of inequality and injustice. I think real change is most sustainable when people are working simultaneously to understand problems at the theoretical level and implementing research-informed policies at the level of practice. I feel like my  ability to study and communicate complex ideas is better suited for researching and writing and teaching, so I decided to pursue my PhD to do all of those things as a career!

What are some ways you practice sustainability in your everyday life?

For me, it really starts with checking in with myself. One area where I noticed more waste was in my kitchen, so I have been putting in place more consistent and flexible meal plans to avoid food waste. I also compost, use reusable + refillable cleaning products, and always make cafe quality beverages from home to avoid plastic!

How are you celebrating Earth Day?

I like to spend Earth Day reflecting on how the conversations around environmentalism and the policies of this past year have improved or changed. I'll listen to some podcasts and then journal to guide this reflection and also set some new sustainable priorities for the next year.

What are some accounts you follow for tips on living more sustainably?

@Queerbrownvegan is one of my favorites. They are doing so much to educate on complex issues in sustainability in a concise and compelling way! I also love @blackforager for info on next-level sustainable food consumption and @acteevism on sustainable fashion and imperfect sustainability.

What are your favorite brands at personellelimo?

I love Back Beat Co for their comfortable, colorful, and perfectly stylish basics! I’m also obsessed with the sustainably sourced scents that Juniper Ridge packs into their body washes and incense. Finally, I have been dying to get my hands on Xenia Taler's checkered bamboo plates!

Taylr Anne Castro, Etto Oil

Tell us about Etto Oil and what led you to start it.

Etto Oil was created out of the desire to have a simple skincare routine, made with only the purest organic ingredients to nurture your skin. Living in coastal California, I acquired a love for the slow life with an appreciation for the art of self care. Approaching life in observation and intention, I wanted to curate a life that included only what was necessary and of pleasure. I created Etto Oil because I wanted to create a brand that was thoughtful and a product that would be used every day (my husband and I both use it daily!). I have always found that oil nourished my skin the best and it always feels like an act of self care when applying. Founded on the idea of making your skincare routine a time for yourself, Etto Oil was created to nourish your skin with botanical ingredients while enjoying the aroma of sweet citrus and subtle spices mixed with oils from around the world.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

This year, I am thankful for so much! I feel very lucky to have my health, a job and a wonderful small home. I plan on being very intentional with my gift giving this year by giving gifts that will be used every day. Supporting small business is the only way I will be shopping this year, and I plan on wrapping all of my gifts thoughtfully using eco-friendly gift wrap.

Why is shopping small so important?

When you shop small, every sale makes our day. We get so excited!! Your support helps us keep going! I read a really beautiful quote the other day that states it perfectly. "When you shop small, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table, a family pay a mortgage, or a student pay for college.” Shopping small is so important, especially this year with everything that has been happening. Shop small and make all of the small business owners do the happy dance after each sale!

Katra Awad, To The Nile

What’s the story behind your brand?

To the Nile has evolved through my love for making small batch jewelry and print pieces while paying homage to my heritage. I have a collection of digital art prints I’ve made called ‘The Heritage’ series, they are colorful and are rooted in cross-cultural memories growing up. My father is first generation from Egypt and my mother’s lineage is of Zacatecas roots from Mexico. I’m proud of my heritage and have always been inspired by the stories of our ancestors and their history and the ways they tended to the earth, their art and communities. To the Nile’s collection is handcrafted and made with my passion for making wearable objects and art while still incorporating storytelling with an intention to create quality pieces that can be enjoyed and are accessible to all.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

This year and on, I am buying gifts for friends and family from small businesses and brands that are ethically made and have a lesser impact on the environment. I wish for love, understanding, community care and awareness during this holiday season for all.

Why is shopping small so important?

We need ALL our communities to thrive so I think it’s very important to shop small, local and support BIPOC as well for those who can afford to.

Aarica Nicole, Aarica Nicole Vintage

Tell us about how you got started buying and selling vintage.

Aarica Nichole Vintage was a dream of mine I brought to fruition back in 2018.  When I was younger, I always had an interest in fashion and even took sewing lessons after school in 8th grade. Thrifting was also something I did in my free time as a hobby with friends and my mom. Growing up, I always wanted to own my own store or become a fashion designer, but I wasn’t exactly sure how I would get there. When I started studying fashion merchandising and digital commerce in college, I knew for sure starting a business online was the way to go. While I was in college I really began experimenting with my style using pieces I found at thrift stores. That’s when I really fell in love with creating fashionable, trendy outfits almost completely second hand. My love for styling and secondhand clothing only grew while working in the fashion industry. Sustainability had also become a big passion of mine - the excess of the fashion industry didn’t sit right with me. While I was working in the corporate world I decided to start selling vintage clothing on Etsy whenever I could find the time. I loved how I was combining my passion for secondhand, sewing, and helping the environment all in one swoop. When my shop started gaining traction, I took the plunge and dove deep into my Etsy business and I haven’t looked back since.  Sometimes when you have that gut feeling you have to take a risk!

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

This year, most of my wishlist will be from small/locally owned businesses, specifically black-owned. I love buying gifts from antique stores to find really unique memorable gifts that I know no one else will have or local shops that carry a variety of brands and vendors because I like to know who I’m supporting when I’m shopping.

Why is shopping small so important?

Shopping small/locally is important because small business is a big part of our economy in this country and it helps communities thrive.  Small businesses create a sense of community, jobs, individuality, and transparency which are often not key drivers for big businesses.

Jasmine Black, Mine

What was your inspiration for starting Mine.?

I started Mine. after I fell in love with flowers and the powers they hold. My friend and I were having a girls night while drinking wine, and we just listed off brand names, formulation ideas and product potential. So it kind of started from there. Following that evening I began to grow my own flowers and infused them into hand selected oils suitable for all skin types, genders and sexes. Following the success of product creation I launched my first batch without a set price. I wanted the product to not only be inclusive of everyone based on their sex, gender, and skin type but also people’s budgets. Not everyone can afford a 40 facial oil. So I made it donation based with 25% of the proceeds donated to The Trans Women of Color Collective Fund. That was successful and we were collectively able to raise over 150 for TWOCC. Later on I started creating makeup bags, headbands and a couple other products to go along with my first baby, Everything Oil. We’ve also been able to raise money for other organizations as well, which I’m very proud of!

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

This holiday season I’m really looking to purchase skincare and makeup for myself, friends, and family that I know will work and they will use. I’m focusing on products with good ingredients that I know will work and I will want to reach for. I’m hoping this will minimize my waste along with my friends’ and families’.

Why is shopping small so important?

It’s so important to shop small and local because that can make a small business owner’s day. One order can help them pay for more products or to pay for their groceries that week.

Ariel Rezek, Rezek Studio

Why did you start Rezek Studio?

Rezek Studio is an LA-based clothing company with colorful, feminine pieces that can’t go unnoticed. I launched the brand at the end of 2018 after seeking certain staple silks pieces with no luck. At the time everything was black or white. I decided to make my own and ended up developing them. I figured if I wanted them, others would too.

What are you focusing on when it comes to shopping for gifts?

I've been shopping mostly for loungewear this year, so I’m going to start manifesting the day I can dress up and go out. by wishing for something for that day, whenever it may be!

Why is shopping small important?

It’s important to shop small now more than ever. Small businesses are the real drivers of creativity and employment growth.

We talked to some of the mamas we love to find out what they’re doing to celebrate and what they’re wishing for to give us some gift-giving inspo.

What the Mamas We Love are Wishing for This Mother’s DayWe just moved to Joshua Tree so this year I want to spend Mother's Day in our backyard in the middle of the desert riding our bikes, making bbq, grilling up corn and delicious tacos, hanging out by the pool with my kiddos followed by watching the sunset— which is my favorite thing to do! The desert sunsets are magical and therapeutic.

What I love most about being a mom is seeing the world through my kids’ eyes. Everything seems brand new again. There's so much love, adventure and curiosity in their eyes. Being able to hold space for them and teach them things and seeing how they go on and navigate life with that given knowledge is so profound.

My Mother’s Day wish list consists of the simple things that bring me joy. I love dried flowers because they're a perfect decoration piece and that live forever.  I love the pink twist candle. The unique shape and pop of color is fun and a scented candle at the end of the day is calming and pure joy easing into the night. The black yin-yang cup is perfect for my morning adaptogen tonic before homeschooling the kiddos.

What the Mamas We Love are Wishing for This Mother’s Day“I’m really trying to stay positive about this epidemic, so with everything that’s happening, Mother’s Day is going to be a little different this year. I’m hoping to order my favorite pasta at our local restaurant and have some quality time with my family.

I love being a mom because spending time with my babies every single day is priceless. I love being their mom and teaching them to be better and kind little humans. The reward I get everyday makes my heart happy, and even though motherhood is not easy, with every “I love you” from them makes it all worth it.

When I discovered personellelimo I automatically fell in love with everything - they not only have what I’m looking for, but everything for every type of mom. My main focus is wearing things inspired by motherhood so it’s important for me to find pieces like these that I can always wear.”

What the Mamas We Love are Wishing for This Mother’s Day“I’ll most likely spend Mother’s Day at home and I hope to sleep in a bit (Andy & Prairie are you reading this ;-) ) then wake up to a clean house (okay okay maybe that is too much to hope for). We will definitely go on a walk, have a nice meal and a fun drink together - and that'll be just perfect.

I love all the things that come with being a mom lately. Being around a beautiful little human who is constantly learning and teaching me along the way - it's a magical experience. Motherhood brings me so much joy, it's wild to remember that not so long I wasn't sure if I even wanted to have kids at all.

Since we are home so much right now, I have been enjoying fun little pieces to make simple everyday tasks (like washing our hands, making afternoon tea, setting the table) feel a bit more special. I love things made of natural materials, and I (predictably) gravitate toward a desert color palette.

What the Mamas We Love are Wishing for This Mother’s Day“I plan on spending Mother’s Day drinking my coffee hot (for once!), and loving on my three beautiful children!

What I love most about being a mother is my ability to be a safe place, a warm hug, a laugh, an open ear, a friend - all in one. Raising my babies is a blessing I will never take for granted.

There is nothing I love more than being a mother and homemaker. Mothering my babies and making my house a home are my pride and joy. I try to make all my shopping choices carefully with my home in mind. Creating a beautiful place for my kids to remember is what I strive for!”

Or maybe your space has gone stale now that you’ve spent more than enough time there. Either way, help is here. We tapped some of our fave ladies of inspiring spaces we love to see how they’re making their spaces a comfortable home, along with their picks from our Home & Gifts Collection.

At Home with the Ladies of Inspiring Spaces We Love

“I've always been a homebody and focused on keeping my house nice and cozy, but it's definitely a different vibe these days staying home. I tidy once or twice a day, just to keep it somewhat neat, and light candles and palo santo sticks regularly to mask the stench of two permanent boys. And I allow way more screen time than usual, which means lots more cuddling on the sofa. Cooking and baking all day is annoying because of the nonstop dishwasher filling and emptying, but it creates a homey vibe unlike anything else.”

"I love to make a space feel personal and serene so as we grow, it grows with us. In this moment we're living in, I've felt a need for simplicity and practicality and I've rearranged areas of our home to evoke that feeling. Books have been moved to different shelves, vases moved from room to room and the much needed closet cleaned out to make space for cooler clothes for warmer weather. I love to burn palo santo and play my favourite music while I do this to get into that chill headspace.”

“Burning candles or diffusing calming oils 24/7, getting fresh flowers delivered from a local gem & drinking countless cups of hot tea (with healthy adaptogens) are keeping our home extra cozy during social distancing. Living in my Mate the Label sweats, Arq pieces and comfy socks too, of course.”

“During this time, I’ve realized the importance in making my home a cozy and relaxing place to spend ‘me’ time in. I’ve been trying to keep the house picked up (not easy with two kids home!) and feeling organized. I always have a candle burning and have been adding some new pieces from the shop to my personal collection. It feels good to update my space and get rid of things that we don’t need anymore. I’ve been loving our new Ekobo dinnerware, Boy Smells candles, Kudd:krig wall hangings and Jenny Pennywood hand towels for the kitchen.”

V-Day Gift Ideas from our Prism Babes

“Fun gifts with a focus on design and sustainability, like the Rose Checkerboard Baby Baggu, are my jam! I'm also obsessed with unique home goods, jewelry, and accessories that freshen up my vibe. I’m really loving the Arc Lucite Incense Holder, Terrazzo Cream Porter Ceramic Mug, and Gold Miro Necklace. Earthy beauty products and nail polish in modern hues are just the icing on the V-day cake!”

V-Day Gift Ideas from our Prism Babes

“I love receiving gifts that serve a purpose and inspire me. Self-care products that I normally would not buy for myself are always a treat. I also love receiving decorative pieces for my apartment, like the Anza Plant Stand paired with a cute potted plant or photography books, like California Trip. Another favorite is receiving something unique and one of a kind, but what really matters most is that the person put thought into the gift!”

- Sydney @sydneysixx

V-Day Gift Ideas from our Prism Babes

“I love spoiling my friends for holidays! I usually get a few small/affordable trinkets and this year I am picking some of my favorite products I use daily to share with them. I chose items like my favorite Everyday Oil, Balm from Olio E Osso, and the Agnes Polish from J.Hannah. For me and my boyfriend, Valentine’s Day is more about getting away and cozy quality time than gifts. That’s why I like the idea of gifting the Sweet Grapefruit Candle, some sweets, and a card to show my love.”

- Mayson @maysonhauck

V-Day Gift Ideas from our Prism Babes

“February is the month of love, and in my case, I’m really focusing on self-love! My gift guide contains all sorts of amazing goodies, great for a self-care night in. I love looking through beautiful books, like Dream Baby Dream; lighting a candle like my fav, the Love Potion Candle; rejuvenating my skin with natural oils; and slipping into something light and comfy, like the Pink Kelly Intimate Set. These gifts are not only amazing to give to yourself, but also to your girlfriends.”

We’re shifting our focus on feeling centered, open, and mindful; welcoming challenges and life-altering personal growth. To help us prepare for this journey, we talked to some of our most inspiring female brand owners to see how they’re starting their new year and what they’re shopping for to lead them in the right direction.

“My New Year's rituals are such an important beginning to a new year. I begin with a deep cleansing ritual and intention setting ceremony inside my home. This purification process allows me to settle into my space for the new year and invite ease and flow into my daily life. My intention for 2020 is to practice PRESENCE in all that I do.”
- Kristen of Muse Bath

“I’m going into 2020 with a refined mission for myself and my business: Be colorful. Be bolder. Be
more of myself. With this bolder energy, I am focusing on connecting more with my community and loudly promoting peace, joy, and artistry in whatever way I can, starting within myself first.”
- Leela of Native Bear (now called The Rainbow Vision)

“My team and I spent most of 2019 shifting the direction of CAM to align with our personal passions for sustainability which allowed us to start 2020 off with a bang. We just launched our new recycled metal designs and created what I think may be the first jewelry recycling program. My intention and goal is to continue moving CAM in this sustainable direction while sharing this passion with our clients and retailers.”
- Christen of CAM Jewelry

“This last decade has been life changing in so many ways and I’m ready to start fresh for the new year and decade ahead. For Prism, I intend to work on building relationships with brands and artists that align with our core values to grow my business in a meaningful and ethical way. My personal goals include slowing down and being more present in my day to day life, especially with my family and two daughters. I want to continue working on myself; being kind, helping others and finding peace within my busy lifestyle of being a small business owner and mother.”

- Dayna of personellelimo

Whether you’re going full Marie Kondo (is that still a thing?) on your life, or just giving yourself small goals, like remembering to water your plants - our Gift Shop is full of items that’ll help you embrace this new light wherever you are in your journey.

Crazy creative, impeccable taste, and always in-the-know - it’s no secret why we turned to these women for their gift-giving advice. And as small business owners themselves, they know how important it is to support other artists & makers by spending with intention, this holiday season and always.

I love to shop with our local stockists for gifts in the old fashioned way; walk into a well-curated store and see what speaks to me for people instead of showing up with a list in hand. It helps alleviate the stress of finding something specific - instead you just say "Oh, this is so Poppy!" (my daughter!). It's a really joyful way of gift shopping that’s a reminder of what giving is all about: thoughtfulness. This year, I'm wishing for a pair of Moxi roller skates, the Rihanna book, and a jade roller.

Kristen from P.F. Candle Co.

My friends and family usually get clothes from my brand, but these picks are great little additions to my gifts for them. I really love picking out gifts that suit peoples’ personalities and likes and I love having a little bit of everything for the very different people in my life. As for MY personal wishlist, I'd love to have the
Silver.Skate.Seventies: California Skateboarding book, the La Muralla Roja Puzzle (for a lazy day after Christmas), and a plant stand from the Prism X LOREM collection because they’re just so good!
Isadora from Back Beat Co.

Since I’m lucky enough to pick out the gifts every year, I make sure our Gift Shop is full of local artists and brands I love supporting, and I’m really excited about the newest additions to our ever-growing roster of female owned businesses. Everyone on my list will be getting a
Seeing Stars Horoscope Book and PF Candle in a scent I know they’ll love. It brings me so much joy to share a piece of Prism with my friends and family and to know that I’m not just giving a gift, I’m supporting people I believe in and encouraging the people in my life to shop small.
- Dayna from personellelimo

I love to give items that are personal and thoughtful, but also useful. Beauty and self care products are always a safe bet when it comes to gifting. I’m currently obsessed with Everyday Oil -- I know I will be giving it a lot this holiday! I also love gold jewelry so it’s a safe bet you can find something like the Rendezvous Chain Bracelet on my list, as well as special items for the home like the Topo III Print.
Michelle from Callahan

We know there are so many options when it comes to gift shopping; ones that are easier, cheaper, and quicker - but we really appreciate it when you take the time to support us and the businesses we carry by shopping local at Prism. Our Gift Shop is full of hand-picked presents everyone on your list will love.
